BASICS OF HAWAIIAN KAPA MAKING Monday Nov. 6, 13 and 20 10 am - 1 pm with Dalani Tanahy
This course will explore kapa cultivation, history and methods of processing the wauke, mulberry plant bark. Participants will learn about traditional tools, see excellent examples of kapa and carve their own ‘ohe kāpala printing stamps. In our final class, you will explore natural dyes, practice printing your stamps and think about how pattern and design connect stories and meaning.

Dalani Tanahy - 30 year practitioner, instructor and artist in the art of Hawaiian Kapa. Artwork can be seen at Ka Makana Ali'i mall, Disney Aulani Resort, Cathedral of St Andrew, Royal Patrons Chapel. Museum kapa in the British Museum, National Museum of Wellington Te Papa, NZ, the National Museum of the American Indian Smithsonian. This artist makes and/or gathers all the traditional tools and grows the wauke plants (Paper mulberry) used for making her kapa.
