Pochoir and Gouache

Express imagery by reimagining light and shadow, texture and surface as dynamic layers of color and form using the pochoir technique in this 3-day workshop. Gouache is a magnificent, water-based paint used for creating rich, opaque and velvety surfaces, and the tradition of pochoir has a deep history in book arts and hand-colored prints. Through demonstrations along with one-on-one feedback and instruction, students gain fidelity with how to create compositions in the medium of pochoir, whether representational or with abstract patterns and form. Pochoir, a hand-stenciling process, is introduced as a way to build collage-like surfaces using gouache in an additive method and can be employed in a multitude of ways. 

This workshop is generously supported by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts through our 2025 Biennium Grant and is part of our 97th Annual Exhibition Programming. This workshop includes paper, stencil materials, shop supplies and brushes for use in class. 16 hours of workshop instruction and 1 week of additional open studio time in April following the workshop to advance your projects.

ABOUT LIZ

Elizabeth Ferrill received her BFA in painting and printmaking from Cornish College of the Arts and her MFA in printmaking from the Rhode Island School of Design. She has had solo exhibitions nationally and internationally, including in Aspen, Nashville, Omaha, New York City, and Berlin, Germany. She is the Artistic Director of Painting, Drawing and Printmaking at Anderson Ranch.
