Dear Printers- It is such an honor to organize this exhibition on behalf of the Honolulu Printmakers. Our Juror made a carefully curated selection of many fine prints this year. There was so much great work to choose from. We had high participation rates among students and neighbor island artist this year and I saw a lot of fresh work and new names along side many of our legacy artists.
As always, there is amazing work that does not make it into the show each year. Do not get discouraged. Psst! —my work was also not selected this year. We love and appreciate having your support in the form of volunteering and participating even if you were not included in the show this year. The Annual Exhibition is our largest volunteer run project every year. It is an opportunity for us to gather and celebrate. I will be in touch soon about opportunities to assist with the exhibition. Much Aloha, Denise
JUROR’S STATEMENT
It is an honor to be the juror for the 2024 Honolulu Printmakers annual show. I came to Hawaiʻi in 2022 as a curatorial fellow in works on paper, photography, and new media at Honolulu Museum of Art where I work with the Western collection. Since my very first days, I was impressed by the long tradition and quality of printmaking in Hawaiʻi. This show is further evidence of the level of creativity and talent among artists here. The Honolulu Printmakers have been seminal to the definition of the arts in Hawaiʻi since the beginning of the last century. Many of Hawaii’s most respected artists have provided a gift print for the annual show and many more have supported the Printmakers as instructors, volunteers, or students, assuring that there is a communal place for the development of the creative arts. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve this institution and this community.
As a juror, I strived to show a representative slice of the work being produced here today. I endeavored to judge each work on its own merits while being inclusive of stylistic categories. Printmaking is an intimate medium and digital reproductions do not do it justice. The details in texture, color, and line are not always available on the screen. The decisions were difficult, and I might have erred at times. If your work was not selected this year, I would encourage you to apply again next year and to continue to explore and expand on the medium of printmaking.
Let me thank the Honolulu Printmakers for the great service they provide our community and to all those who entered the exhibition for their creativity and courage in sharing their work. Congratulations to all!
